PRACTISING DESIGN OPERATION(4) BY TEARING AND FOLDING

In order to start that step, I needed to understand which idea behind the previous steps I have so I analysed my previous constructs again. My strategy was “integration” because all units in my constructs have meaning when they are together. If a unit is put away , the whole loses its quality. Therefore, I made my construct according to that strategy.

After finish my model, I realised that I was so free because my strategy was so general. For example, at the previous stages, I created intagration by grouping relations between units but at that stage, I created a center, which all weight of tear+fold parts comes from there, to attain an integration. I mean, I felt unconfortable about that.

COMMENT ON “ORNAMENT AND CRIME” WRITTEN BY ADOLF LOOS

In that week, I had a chance to read an article called Ornament and Crime written by Adolf Loos. That text was written for a debate between Adolf Loos and Josef Hoffmann. Adolf Loos briefly justified that ornamentation is bad use of materials, I mean, resources.

Adolf Loos is a functionalist so functions of something were given importance more than their ornament. Ornament is a thing which people spend too much time for it but it is also a thing that sullies something that ornamentation is applied on it, according to Adolf Loos. Therefore, a person that makes ornamentation on something commits crime. According to him, it is a crime because it spends time and wastes materials, since ornament is usually popular for a short time. After that time, it loses its quality. Sometimes, that kinds of things are put away or disappeared. Without ornamentation, materials are usually used for a long time. According to the text, another thing which proofs that ornaments is a crime is that people who applies ornaments on something do not earn enough money for that. They usually work hard but earn less. On the other hand, understanding that Adolf Loos is against ornamentation is misleading. According to his works he used pure materials as an ornament such marble. He used character of marble that comes from nature.

In summary, ornament is bad use of resources that wastes time, money and people’s effort. Instead of using that kind of ornament, if people use pure materials and their pure quality, it may not be waste time, money and effort so it may be used for a long time.

Thought About “Space and Structure” From “Analysing Architecture” Written by Simon Unwin

In that week, I have read a text called “Space and Structure” from “Analysing Architecture” written by Simon Unwin. The text is about how the relation between space and structure and attitudes of architects affect the end results of structures. Author explains that by dividing approaches into three categories. These are dominance of structural order, the dominant spatial order and harmonic relation between them.

While writer is explaining disagreement between structural and spatial organization, he gives some example solutions from Greek architecture. The things which I have understood from that part of the text are that Greeks wanted to create a place that lots of people could watch something and at the same time, they were tended to rectangular spaces when they built amphitheater. They found some solutions for that. They created a circular area which covered the focal space in a rectangle and the corners were left. Another solution is fitting the seats to rectangle determined by the structure. Then he mentions Egyptian hypostyle hall. The ancient Egyptians used columns in different qualities to create different spaces. After that, he gives an example to emphasize how columns used to create focal areas. All these examples show that how architects advise areas to use for different purposes by using structural elements. He also gives examples from religious places such as Hagia Sophia in order to highlight how outside of building is shaped according to inside of the building.

In order to explain harmonic relation between spatial and structural organization he gives examples step by step. Thing that I have understood from that part, architects have started to create their own geometry. They created grid with columns and use them in different ways such as distorting them and different purposes such as framing the main entrance.

In general the text emphasizes that what thoughts of architects or how they use the structural elements shapes the end result of a structure

“REGULATING LINES” FROM TOWARDS A NEW ARCHITECTURE BY LE CORBUSIER

In this week, I have read one of the parts in “Towards a New Architecture” by Le Corbusier which is called “Regulating Lines” I have learned something that have to be emphasize from that text. I want to try to explain those things which I learned from the text.

Lines that are identified by Corbusier are used to completing the creation of architecture. At primitive times, the lines were used for different purposes such as determining space to live in or roads to find directions. In order to determine or create those things in regular way the regulating lines were formed by measurement produced by using human scales and right angles that human eyes can recognize easily. To measure other objects that have various distances, units created with rhythm are used.

Using the regulating lines in design helps combine artistic and mathematical thoughts to create satisfaction because the lines cannot be used without measurement and calculations. I mean, the regulating lines are form of mathematic in tangible ways. This situation results in making the relations in construct understandable in geometrical way.

In my opinion, the regulating lines shows the reasons behind the beauty of construction and where some parts in construct comes from (I mean, how they were created), while the regulating lines are regulating the construction.
