AN INTRODUCTION TO TECHNIQUES OF COLLAGE (A+B=C)

First, I search for an image and a text to work on techniques of collage

COLLAGE-I (Hard Copy)

I decomposed the image and the text that I have chosen by stripping vertically. Then I separated the stripes into parts according to their differentiations then I matched them.

COLLAGE-II (Digital)

At that step, I used only the image that I chose to work with photoshop. I started the collage by dividing it into planes in different sizes in order to recompose them in a abstract manner.

PRACTISING DESIGN OPERATIONS-3

While I was working on that practice, I tried to understand how a changing in the size of a plane of a unit results in whole. For this reason, I made a model by looking at the diagrams of the previous model but while I was at that step of the design, I faced some difficulties because the diagrams which I drew was so specific to create another design. Thus, I drew another diagram that shows only groups which was my aim and the relations between them.

Finally, I made that model.

PRACTISING DESIGN OPERATIONS-2

Because of the limits of the previous model, the relations between the units weren’t visible so I made another model with “13 units”. It has became easier tho control the relations. I paid attention the operations (copy, move, rotate) again and I tried to separate the relations that the one inclludes more powerful relations and another one includes weaker relations into two groups. Fİnally, I made that.

Then, I drew three diagrams to show units in relation, types of relations and strength of the relations.

ABOUT LE CORBUSIER AND TOWARD AN ARHITECTURE

The text that we were given and that is called pure creation of the mind is taken from Le Corbusier’s book which is called Toward an Architecture

Le Corbusier is one of people who live in order to try to learn lots of things about architecture. He spent his life in a search for architectural verities. He travelled many places to observe traditional architecture of those places. He wrote those experiences on his book called Towards an Architecture to serve as the manifesto for generation of architects. I think changing the perception of architecture at that time was his one of the purposes because he made architecture adapt for altered lifestyle. Therefore he tried to highlight functionalism because of modified lifestyle. For example due to increase in population in cities, need for places for living in happened so there had to be places that were benefitted by people efficiently. He also combined functionality and design. For instance, by using columns in his design he distributed weight to columns so there was no weight on the walls. This situation led to free designs

To sum up, Le Corbusier was not the first person that emphasized that things but he was one of the people that had influenced life and architecture. In my opinion, Corbusier has changed many minds by writing Toward an Architecture.

ASTRACTING SUPERIMPOSE IMAGE AND ANALYSIS OF SPATIAL RELATIONS

Instructors asked us to take our first and second photographs then print them on acetate sheets. (B&W  print out) After that, we produce new initial image for a new abstract model.

I analysed relations between elements which are overlapped. For example I tried to find intersection points that are important for overlapped part and I concentrated on alignment conditions.

At the end, I made my model according to my skecth that shows the relations.

PRACTISING ABSTRACTION METHODS AND ANALYSIS OF SPATIAL RELATIONS -2-

We were given 5 images and asked to choose one of them. I chose that

1

The image has been created from other different images so it was difficult to analyse the relations for me. For this reason, I tried to sektch the relations to see more clearly.

Then I started to make my model. The model in the first picture was my first model but there were missing and uncontroled parts for me so I have revised it.

POSTERIZE

We have started to learn Photoshop. We were asked to make a poster to start testing our Photoshop skills. We were expected to pay specific attention to basic organisational and compositional principles while arranging our design elements that denote linear and planar qualities, rather than making figurative or narrative references. I made that.
